It is mandatory under most welding standards that a WPS shall be produced & welding personnel qualified before welding work begins on a production piece that must comply under a standard.

A WPS is a proven documented instruction to welding personnel which provides guidance on the making of a defect free weld.

The WPS is developed from a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR).

The PQR records all essential variables and welding parameters used in the original test weld of the production piece.
Upon compliance of all post weld testing under the standard, the WPS is then written, based on the information validated by the PQR.
